Theo Magongoma

Theo Magongoma • Baritone

Born in South Africa, Theo Magongoma is a dramatic baritone featured in OPERA Magazine in an article about black South African opera singers on the rise in the world today.  A graduate of the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town and a former member of both the Cape Town Opera Studio for Emerging Young Artists and Dallas Opera’s first Young Artists Studio, he has been the recipient of two distinguished scholarships, one from Queensland Opera (Australia) and a Bruce Foote Scholarship from The Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas (USA).  Theo has performed in leading operatic roles with the orchestras of South Africa, for Cape Town Opera, for Touring Opera Companies and at Art Festivals around the world in the USA, UK, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Ireland, The Netherlands, Singapore, and Japan. Theo has been a winner at several international voice competitions including the 2022 Grandi Voci International Opera Competition, Austria; the 2022 Spazio Musica International Opera Competition; Italy; the 2022/ 2023 Vienna New Year’s International Music Competition from the City of Vienna and the 2023 Lugarno International Music Competition, Switzerland.  Theo recently made his acclaimed UK concert debut at the Wigmore Hall in London. He has upcoming engagements in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Europe, including a concert of Italian Opera Arias with the Mihail Jora Philharmonic Orchestra in Bacau, Romania.
