Voices from Everywhere

LOBBY REGENTS 3.jpg

At the "early bird" deadline on December 21, 2013 we were nearly swamped with applications! Singers from twenty-one states signed up to compete for more than $15,000 in prizes at the first vocal competition slated for June 21, 2014 at the Regents' Theater in the Valley Center for the Performing Arts on the beautiful campus of Holy Names University. All voice types are represented, including counter-tenors, and also include a number of foreign born singers from Europe, South America, Asia and Canada with ages ranging from 12 to 62! The singers' videos offered musical selections from opera, operetta, and art song to symphonic repertoire, musical theater, and Gilbert & Sullivan with even a little Harold Arlen and classical/hip-hop hybrid for good measure!

Six judges are now busily looking and listening to the videos and assigning each singer a numerical score for each submission. The field of competitors will be narrowed to no more than 21 singers in each Tier who will advance to the Semifinals. At that time, a second panel of judges will select just 7 singers from each of the two Tiers for the Finals. Those fourteen singers will be invited to Oakland for the Finals Competition next June 21st. Mark your calendar now and don't miss the exciting final round of singing at the inaugural JTVA Vocal Competition.
